Palette Adventures: Six Months of Paint, Peonies, and Creativity!

It’s hard to believe it’s already been six months since my last update—where does the time go? I’m excited to share a glimpse into my artistic journey so far in 2025. From quiet winter mornings to vibrant spring afternoons, I’ve been diving into painting, exploring new techniques, and finding joy in every brushstroke.

Take a moment to catch up on my latest art adventures below—I hope they inspire you as much as they’ve inspired me. Follow me on instagram here.

Greg Barnes: He Makes It Look So Easy in Oil or Pastel

January kicked off with a painting workshop on Seabrook Island, SC, led by the talented Greg Barnes. The local Art Guild does a fantastic job bringing artists to the island for demonstrations and workshops, and I can’t imagine a prettier place to explore any medium.

Greg demonstrated both oil and pastel techniques. I fully expected to stick with my favorite medium -oil- but after just one day, I borrowed his extra pastel set and had an absolute blast! Not only is Greg talented, but he’s also kind. He’ll be returning to Seabrook Island, SC, January 2026, so if you’re interested, just reach out (patti@ratcliffeart.com) and I’ll share how to join us. Let's keep the learning going.

Mary Segars: Palette Knife Painting

The Seabrook Island Artist Guild also welcomed Mary Segars from Beaufort, SC, for an inspiring lecture and workshop. Day 1 we dove into painting almost exclusively with a palette knife, a unique technique, and what a fun experience it turned out to be!

Michele Usibelli: Bold Brushwork and Rich Color

In April, I had the wonderful opportunity to learn from one of my favorite artists, Michele Usibelli. Michele traveled from Washington state to Charlotte, my hometown, where Shirley with Award Winning Artists Workshops hosted her. Michele’s drawing skills (she’s a former architect) and use of color are truly enviable.

From Soil to Oil: My Peony Garden Blossomed into a Painting Series

Beyond painting, my time is often happily consumed by tennis and gardening (and now a bit of pickle ball!). My mother started a tradition of gifting me a peony plant every Mother’s Day, and I’ve continued it with my daughters—and myself! This May, my peony garden did not disappoint. The blooms are fleeting, but I was thrilled to capture them on canvas. These new peony paintings will soon be on display (and for sale) at Cotswold Marketplace.

GALS Group Blends Critique with Connection

GALS stands for “Gathering Artists Learning and Sharing.” In the spring of 2023, a group of us (golfers mostly) visited a Picasso museum exhibit in Charlotte. Over lunch, we decided to all paint the same image and then meet to share our different styles, critique each other’s work, and enjoy drinks and dinner together.

Last week, it was my turn to host. Naturally, I chose a peony image to send out to the group. Below are our interpretations. It’s a fun and inspiring way to learn, grow, and make new friends through art.

From Heart to Home: Let's Paint Your Story

Art is deeply personal, and I’m honored to help capture your memories on canvas. If you have a special memory you would like me to capture, let's start the conversation. I am delighted to create a custom piece of art for you that can be handed down for generations. Working together, we'll make sure the size and design works for the space with a simple process. Let's create your forever piece!

From Canvas to Charity: Donating to Support Good Causes

In March, I was delighted to have the chance to donate art to organizations that support our community. The Myers Park Presbyterian Church Youth Ministry’s annual fundraiser aids in funding mission trips and scholarships, while the yearly Mint Museum Auxiliary Auction's Room To Bloom Spring Symposium, supports museum acquisitions.

From My Studio to Your Space: Where to Purchase My Paintings

If you want to see more of my work in person head over to Cotswold Marketplace retail design center in Charlotte, NC or to Boone, NC at the Common Good shop and gallery. Also, you are welcome to make an appointment to come visit my studio.

The People Behind the Paintbrush: My Family, My Inspiration

When you are blessed with three beautiful grown children and two delightful grandchildren, every day truly feels like Mother's Day. The love and joy they bring into my life are immeasurable, and I cherish each moment spent with them. The family shot below captures me surrounded by my brood this past May on Mother's Day.

Indeed, my family is my greatest muse and the foundation for all that I create. Whether it’s a vibrant landscape inspired by our family vacations or a tender portrait capturing my grandchildren, my work is a celebration of the relationships that shape my life. Thanks fam, for the lessons of love and perseverance, but especially for all your support!
